Voices Unchained Trafficking Survivors Initiative Participates in the 2026 National Commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

As part of our unwavering commitment to preventing human trafficking, amplifying survivor voices, and promoting safe migration, Voices Unchained Trafficking Survivors Initiative (VUTSI) proudly participated in the 2026 National Commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, organized by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) with support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The event, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, brought together government agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, survivors of trafficking, youth groups, media organizations, and other key stakeholders to reaffirm Nigeria's collective commitment to ending human trafficking.
This year's global theme, "Human Trafficking is Organized Crime – End the Exploitation," was nationally contextualized with the campaign message: "Trapped Behind the Scam." The theme highlighted the increasing use of deceptive online job offers, fake recruitment agencies, fraudulent scholarship opportunities, romance scams, and other forms of online deception that traffickers use to lure unsuspecting victims into exploitation.
Awareness Walk Against Human Trafficking
Prior to the official commemoration, members of Voices Unchained Trafficking Survivors Initiative joined hundreds of participants in a solidarity and awareness walk through the streets of Abuja. The walk served as a public awareness campaign aimed at educating Nigerians about the realities of human trafficking, encouraging vigilance, and promoting collective responsibility in preventing exploitation.
Walking alongside government institutions, development partners, survivors, youth organizations, and civil society groups demonstrated the importance of collaboration in the fight against trafficking in persons. The awareness walk also provided an opportunity to engage members of the public on recognizing trafficking indicators, verifying overseas job opportunities, and reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
VUTSI's Participation
As a survivor-led organization, VUTSI's participation carried special significance. Our presence reflected our belief that survivors are not merely beneficiaries of anti-trafficking interventions but essential partners in prevention, advocacy, policy development, and survivor support.
Representing the organization, members of VUTSI actively participated in the awareness activities, networked with stakeholders, and strengthened relationships with institutions working towards the elimination of trafficking in persons. The event also provided an important platform to share our vision of building survivor-led solutions that prioritize prevention, protection, rehabilitation, reintegration, and empowerment.
Strengthening Partnerships
The national commemoration also created opportunities to engage with representatives from government agencies, international organizations, and fellow civil society organizations. These interactions reinforced the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing the evolving tactics used by traffickers and ensuring coordinated responses to protect vulnerable populations.
At VUTSI, we firmly believe that ending human trafficking requires collaboration across all sectors. Government agencies, law enforcement, civil society, faith-based organizations, educational institutions, the private sector, media, and survivors all have critical roles to play.

Voices Unchained Trafficking Survivors Initiative remains committed to working closely with NAPTIP, UNODC, international partners, civil society organizations, communities, and survivors to build a future where every person can live free from exploitation.
