Voices Unchained: A New Chapter in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
Abuja, Nigeria | 30 September 2026
On 30 September 2026, Voices Unchained Trafficking Survivors Initiative (VUTSI) marked an important milestone with its inaugural launch ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria, introducing a new survivor-led initiative dedicated to preventing human trafficking, amplifying survivor voices and creating safer futures.
Established by Nigerian survivors of trafficking for forced criminality, VUTSI brings a powerful perspective to the fight against human trafficking: the belief that people with lived experience of exploitation must have a meaningful role in shaping the solutions.
Under the theme “Five Pillars. One Mission: Unchained Voices Advancing the 5P’s Against Human Trafficking,” the launch represented an important step towards building greater awareness, strengthening collaboration and ensuring that survivors are recognised not only as people who have experienced exploitation, but also as advocates, leaders and agents of change.
Turning Lived Experience into Lasting Change
Human trafficking continues to evolve, with criminal networks using deception, manipulation, false promises of employment and financial opportunities, and online recruitment to target vulnerable people.
One particularly concerning form of exploitation is trafficking for forced criminality, in which victims are coerced or manipulated into carrying out illegal activities. This can include cyber-enabled fraud and other criminal operations, often leaving victims facing serious physical, psychological and legal consequences.
Through its survivor-led approach, VUTSI seeks to bring greater understanding to these complex forms of exploitation. By drawing on lived experience, the initiative aims to help communities recognise warning signs, challenge misconceptions and understand how trafficking can affect people from different backgrounds.
At the heart of this work is a commitment to ensuring that survivor voices are heard, respected and included in conversations about prevention, protection and justice.
Five Pillars. One Mission.
VUTSI’s work focuses on several interconnected areas designed to strengthen the response to human trafficking and support safer communities.
These include prevention and public awareness, survivor advocacy and support, safe migration education, research and documentation, youth engagement, policy advocacy, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Together, these priorities reflect the importance of addressing trafficking from multiple angles. Raising awareness can help people recognise deceptive recruitment tactics. Safe migration education can help individuals make informed decisions about employment and travel opportunities. Research and documentation can strengthen understanding of emerging trafficking patterns, while collaboration can help connect survivors with the organisations and institutions working to protect them.
By bringing these efforts together, VUTSI aims to contribute to a more informed, coordinated and survivor-centred response to human trafficking.
Putting Survivors at the Centre
For too long, conversations about human trafficking have often taken place without sufficient involvement from the people who have experienced it firsthand.
VUTSI seeks to help change that.
A survivor-led approach recognises that lived experience can offer invaluable insight into how people are recruited, manipulated and exploited. It also creates opportunities for survivors to influence public awareness, contribute to research, engage with decision-makers and help shape more effective responses.
This does not mean that survivors should be expected to share their stories or relive traumatic experiences to be heard. Rather, it means creating opportunities for their knowledge, perspectives and leadership to inform the work of organisations, communities and institutions.
Through its mission, VUTSI aims to help transform experiences of exploitation into opportunities for education, advocacy and meaningful change.
Building Partnerships for Safer Futures
Addressing human trafficking requires more than the efforts of any single organisation. It depends on cooperation between survivors, communities, civil society organisations, government institutions, development partners and other stakeholders.
VUTSI’s inaugural launch provided an opportunity to introduce its mission and strengthen the conversation around the changing nature of human trafficking, particularly the exploitation of people through forced criminality.
Building awareness is an important first step, but lasting progress also requires practical action: helping people identify risks, improving access to support, strengthening safe migration education and ensuring that survivor perspectives inform the development of policies and programmes.
Through continued engagement and collaboration, VUTSI hopes to contribute to these efforts in Nigeria and beyond.
A Future Where Every Voice Matters
The launch of Voices Unchained Trafficking Survivors Initiative represents the beginning of a journey shaped by courage, lived experience and a shared commitment to change.
Its message is clear: survivors have an essential role to play in preventing exploitation and building a world where fewer people experience human trafficking.
By amplifying survivor voices, equipping communities with knowledge and working alongside partners, VUTSI is committed to advancing a future in which exploitation is challenged, survivors are supported, and everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity and freedom.
One mission. Five pillars. A future where no voice is left unheard.
